More Colorful Hues...

Sophie Theallet is one of my favorite designers and not just because she has dressed our First Lady Michelle Obama, but her clothing is colorful and feminine.  Perhaps it's also because she's a French expat who now lives in Brooklyn - doesn't every cool person live in Brooklyn these days? :) Enjoy!

Colorful Gray Tones

Macy Gray has come up with a new tune that I would normally chalk up as another annoying summer anthem and yet, I find myself liking it and its wonderfully happy message.  Besides, Macy has always been an artist of interest to me - sort of skating on the periphery of cool pop and an eccentrically unique soul.  Her boozy, raspy voice and slight I could care less what you think of me attitude (Dancing with the Stars) is intriguing.  I think there's "Beauty in the World" because she's in it - check out her latest...

The Great Martini!

Martin, my wonderful brother, is the "Great Martini!  Growing up, Martin(far left holding his diploma) was the best role model a young girl could have.  I idolized him and was determined to live up to his expectations.  In a neighborhood where there were less than savory characters, my brother and his friends were the young black men that you seldom see represented in the media.  They were smart, honorable, loving, funny(beyond!), compassionate, supportive of one another, driven and dedicated to their families.  I use to beg my mom during the summer months to let me stay up late so that I could sit outside with him and his friends - he would always let me.  Martin is an excellent writer, artist, athlete, enjoyed architecture, music and sports growing up and aside from my mother, is in many ways the nucleus of our family.  He has traveled the world but has seldom missed getting back home for Holidays and like Santa, his arrival is always eagerly awaited. He's been a huge influence to all of us.  So, as yesterday was his birthday, here's to many more years of laughter and great times with a man that means the world to me!  Happy Birthday bro - let's have a laugh together!

Moving Forward!

This weekend was one of the most spiritually beautiful weekends that I had in a long time.  We celebrated my dear friend Annie's birthday, she turned 16 - again:).  Annie is a woman of strong faith and chose to share her many blessings with those of us fortunate enough to be in her life.  I hope that you are blessed enough to have someone in your life who helps you move forward.  Here's the Israel Noughton song that I discovered in the car ride from the beach with two of her most wonderful girlfriends - Kim and Leemu - enjoy!

The Little White Dress

Anyone who knows me will know that I LOVE color however, I also LOVE white.  Especially during these hot summer months, it offers a refreshingly cool, serene and ethereal energy that we all yearn for - and it looks amazing too!  Here are a few of my faves:

Summer Whites...

Lately I have become obsessed with white metal, perhaps because it's not heavy:). There is something fresh, crisp and industrial about the look.   The cans below from West Elm's display window for instance, have me mentally sketching an all new design for my living room.  Enjoy!

Weekend Bliss!

As the weekend approaches I can't help but to think of the type of food that I would like to eat and where I would like to be while eating it.  I'm definitely a foodie and for me, the thought of food comes first and then the destination usually follows.  Here are some yummy bites from Daniel Boulud and the beautiful settings that will surely enhance any meal.

Feeling Good!

Speaking of Nina Simone, Mary J. Blige has landed the role to portray her in the Biopic that is slated to begin filming this September titled Nina.  There has been a great deal of controversy over  Mary landing the lead role versus other possible performers, most notably, India Arie.  This is a tough one because I happen to LOVE them both!  I can certainly see how Mary's soulful, gut-wrenching and emotional style of singing would lend itself well to the powerful civil rights messages in some of Nina's music.  However, in terms of music style, instrumental ability, a similar weighted voice, obvious afrocentric style, and an uncanny physical similarity - I personally think India is better suited for this role.  There are many soulful singers that Mary can portray -   Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples, Gladys Knight...does it have to be posthumous? In the end, I 'm sure that Mary will do "Just Fine":).

Dance, Dance Dance!

And if you can't - watch someone dance!  I have been blessed enough to do both in my life and one of the most memorable performances that I have experienced was by the Alvin Ailey dance troupe.  There is something about the arts that brings out the best in us.  These performances move you in ways that you do not expect and although there are many great dance troupes in America, these dancers are at the top of my list!  Take Me To The Water is one of my favorites - so is the Nina Simone song that it is named after.  They are currently performing at BAM( The Brooklyn Academy of Music) - please find a way to get there!  Enjoy!

Merci Beaucoup!

Last night I attended a Blog Out Loud event that once again proved that the spirit of collaboration and passion for what you do is a beautiful thing!  The women who created Blog Out Loud - Megan Arquette & Rebecca Orlov, are themselves not only stars in the design arena, but bloggers of  Beach Bungalow 8  and loving. living. small.  They put together a wonderful panel of talented women who were kind, sharing of their knowledge and welcoming to those of us who either just started a blog or are considering it.   Madeleine Albright once said at an event that I attended, that she will never understand women who do not support other women - she would have been proud with last night's energy!  Here's a small thank you to those wonderful women that I met with wishes that we will have an opportunity to do so again!

To the Maxx!

I have a confession to make, like Lucy Sykes, I have for years been a Maxxinista!  It became so well known in my family that one year for Christmas, my brother Martin gave my sister and I gift cards to TJ Maxx and other than the donation that he made to the Relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina, it was a most cherished gift:).  TJ's, Homegoods, Marshalls, Filene's, Century 21(shoppers will know), Syms and Loehman's - there, it's off my chest and it feels good!  Although, I am surprised to see Lucy Sykes, former Marie Claire fashion editor, designer and twin sister of Plum Sykes, former Vogue editor and author of one of my guilty pleasures, Bergdorf Blondes, make such an admission as both women were at the pinnacle of high fashion.  Well, even if you love the "B" stores(Bergdorf, Barney's Bloomies, Bendel's) and I do, having true style means that you do not have to be a victim to them.  Here's a lovely acquisition from the Maxx - Happy Monday!
