Greentop

Joel Sanders Architecture - Broadway Penthouse via Architizer
New Yorkers know, the most exciting happenings take place on rooftops.  I have had the good fortune of being on several rooftops throughout the years in almost every borough.   I saw my first shooting stars (yes, more than one!) on a rooftop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn while learning how to Tango at a  party - let me be clear, there was a full floor, pool and lounge chairs - not too shabby!  I've watched the 4th of July fireworks from a rooftop and recently visited an urban farm on a roof in Tribeca.  Here's a shot of one that I absolutely love, designed by Joel Sanders architecture and Balmori Landscapers.  This beautiful design has given its owners a green retreat from the noise and concrete of the city.  He also managed to bring the outdoors indoors with lush plants surrounding the stairs.  It's great to see New York becoming so green!

Red Rooster

For years, Sylvia's became the "go to" restaurant for politicians and dignitaries to frequent when in New York and visiting Harlem.  Perhaps as a way to show there support of black communities and  garner a few votes in the interim.  Opened during the pinnacle of the Civil Rights movement in 1962, Sylvia, who worked as a waitress at the original luncheonette, received a loan from her farmer mother, purchased the restaurant and history was made.  The soul food at Sylvia's was simply a must - although truth be told, the first time that I went, I was less than impressed by it - I had the impression that Sylvia was no longer doing the cooking.   However, she is a trailblazer who deserves recognition.

The soul food restaurant that impressed me more came years later - most certainly on the tail of Sylvia's success, Spoonbread, opened and run by the lovely former model, Norma Jean Darden.    Norma's restaurant took soul food to an all new level.  It became the toast of the town and again, acknowledged by businesses, politicians, celebrities, the fashion industry and dignitaries alike.  When I met Norma Jean, she was a soft-spoken, humble and beautiful woman.  In addition to having a couple of restaurants in Harlem, this savvy entrepreneur secured catering contracts with several companies, including becoming Dizzy's at Lincoln Center's Club Coca Cola Room's premier consultant.
Each decade presents a new level of success for these gutsy business women - up until this point, they have mostly been women.  Until today, we have Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster.  Marcus' artsy new restaurant is wisely placed on Lenox & 125th street where former President Clinton opened his offices.  Part of a restaurant's success as we all know is what? - location, location, location!  Jump off the 2/3 at 125th and turn around and you're there.  Although Samuelsson pays homage to the history of Red Rooster and Harlem, his food travels far beyond the traditional soul food served at Sylvia's and Spoobread.  He and his team are cultivating dishes that honor a more diverse palate.  It is an exciting and vibrant environment that during my last 2 visits, always seems to be abuzz!  But, make no mistake about it, it's still a neighborhood spot.  I met a lovely grandmother who brought her 10 year old granddaughter there to celebrate her recent casting in a new Harlem theatrical production - they were locals and adorable!  Speaking of meeting someone adorable, I also met Marcus while working at the Today Show when Ann Curry rushed me over to meet him.  I wonder if there is lamb on his menu, you know of the sacrificial variety - he was then single and beyond charming.  I fully anticipate, that like his predecessor's, Sylvia's and Spoonbread, Marcus will have a long successful run with Red Rooster - he did after all have President Obama recently Christen it:)
