Here's to a snaggletoothed Halloween!

Growing up, the excitement of Halloween and Trick or Treating was overwhelmingly fun!  Being a city kid, we had the advantage of going to many apartments, local grocers and any safe establishment that looked like they were giving out candy.  By the end of the evening our bags were stuffed with so much candy that my mom would allow us to go through it and pick out a few pieces and then she would hide it from us and ration it out for the rest of the year - buzz kill!  But the buzz that we got from the massive sugar high was real.  My favorite then and still to this day was Candy Corn - addictive and pure sugar.  Then of course, we would make caramel and candy apples - my other favorite -perhaps that's why the pumpkins are all snaggletoothed.  Just book that dental appointment and let your kids - and you, have some sweet fun this evening.  Happy Halloween!

Autumn Bliss!

Autumn's yummy harvest always encourages us to take scenic drives to our local farms to go pumpkin and apple picking - and to play with some of the cute farm animals.  Just think of all of the delicious pies you can bake! Be sure to dress in comfy clothing and get there!  Here's one of our favorite local places - we missed the hayride, but I did get to ride in the tractor.  Enjoy your weekend!

Into the Woods..

GQ Magazine recently headlined Brooklyn as one of the coolest city's on the planet - well, thanks GQ but many Brooklynites who have lived here for years already knew that!  Aside from all of the great eateries, one of the most important reasons that Brooklyn is cool is the people - some of the coolest and most fearlessly creative people live in Brooklyn.  One such person is renowned artist Susan Woods, who we recently interviewed for Brooklyn Savvy Television in her studio located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.  I say fearless because so many artists live and work in the most undesirable neighborhoods in the city.  As I apprehensively approached the Navy Yard and walked through a vast deserted area of large abandoned buildings and industry, I was relieved when I found Susan's studio and her art - well worth the creepy entry!  Susan is a classically trained musician and a well educated artist whose slender petit frame defies the large scale art and furniture that she creates.  She mainly sculpts and welds metal and wood and her art is fiercely intricate and beautifully crafted.  Instantly I was in awe of Susan's work and as we talked, I became in awe of her.  Her outlook and passion for her work is an inspiration to anyone who is trying to pursue doing what they love.  Brooklyn is a whole lot cooler because Susan lives there!

Haunt Couture!

The first swanky Halloween party that I attended in NY was at my dear friend Ray's Brownstone in Brooklyn. They had just finished renovating and he decided to throw a party - excellent timing:). He opened all rooms in the house to his guests and every room was decorated for the party - it was insane fun! The costume I wore I designed - a bubble skirt, stuffed with pillow filling, spray painted orange with a painted Jack O'Lantern face on the front. I took a black tee shirt and glued candy corn on it, I bought black and orange horizontal striped tights (yeah Ricky's!), black rubber shoes with HUGE bows (I wore this on a normal day:)), and to top it all off I made a black hat with feathers, flowers, jewels and black birds on it - it was fabulous! I won the award for best costume that evening.  Halloween for me has never been about the meaning - which is a tad scary, but given an opportunity to design a great costume and parade around in it - I'm so there!  I LOVE design - plain and simp and my Halloween costumes have always been well designed - let me be clear, pretty and happy designs:).  I was never able to wear anything scary - I would scare myself all night!  Sometimes, what the fashion industry considers to be Haute Couture, looks like Haunt Couture and might be the perfect inspiration for your next Halloween costume.  Some are pretty and some are scary - you decide who you want to be!
